LAST DAY OF JANUARY!

It’s the last day of January and what have YOU DONE FOR POKER TODAY???

Well if your like me and you can’t sit still about the PartPoker IPO you are probably checking PartyPokerIPO.com every 24hours!

In other news – BoDog has been having some incredible tournament action. The other day I was playing on there for their $250,000 PokerBowl qualifier and was surprised to encounter a truly excellent thought provoking game of poker. I would compare it to a fine game of chess which made the 1st place qualification victory exceptionally wondrous. The poker action is really picking up over there – if you haven’t already check it out.

Moral of the story is $5.50 was all it took for me to qualify to possibly win their 250K prize pot. Though it wasn’t easy it sure was challenging and I can’t wait for the big game.

All the Rake that’s fit to Muck…

1. Not Bluffing: Poker mag makes serious start – A poker fanatic and a friend with publishing experience have combined forces to create a new poker magazine that already is selling swiftly off bookstore shelves.
2. Red-hot poker – The pot just keeps getting richer in the poker-tainment racket. Sure, we can thank Ben Affleck and his ilk for giving the wily game a tabloid boost (and we can thank poker for keeping him out of the movies for a nanosecond), but it looks like it’ll outpace the Benifer phenom by a long shot.
3. UW student wins $1.5 million in major poker tourney – A UW-Madison philosophy student pulled off an upset victory in a major poker tournament Thursday night, becoming an instant millionaire. And they say liberal arts majors will never get rich.

Poker Tip of the Day
Short-handed Play:
Aggression is the name of the game. Bet, Bet and Bet some more – even when your beat you have to keep betting. Bet the good hands, Bet the bad hands. Every hand will start off by someone raising and then someone either calling or three betting.

2. Poker and blackjack come to the Sooner State – The day that some tribal leaders in Oklahoma have been waiting for and anti-gambling forces have dreaded finally arrived as some previously prohibited card games including poker and blackjack became legal at a handful of Indian casinos.

Poker Tip of the Day
Waiting for the Blind:
By waiting a full rotation before posting you are allowing yourself a huge advantage. You get to watch how everyone plays/reacts etc. before you even spend a penny. So unless you are familiar with the players do yourself a favor and sit out until the BB comes around.

Squaring off against actresses Catherine O’Hara and Sara Rue and ”Everybody Loves Raymond” stars Ray Romano and Brad Garrett , our hobbled hero …

Poker Tip of the Day
Use A Four Color Deck:
This might seem basic, but, its actually quite advanced. In a recent survey, 6/10 people actually refuse (or don’t know how) to change their options to 4-Color Decks.

Its fairly simple and seemingly obvious, just go into the options section and click the Four Color Decks. You now have an advantage over many mistake making folks out there!

Everyone who has played long enough has probably misread their cards at some point or another (usually after a long stretch), especially flushes. Using a four colored deck makes it much easier to identify flushes (and more importantly flush draw threats) and enables you to use your brain powers elsewhere.

3rd Party Programs and Annie Duke

Try using 3rd Party Programs – they’ll bring up your game!

Congratulations to Card4, TeflonDon, and thuglove316 winners of our January Private Play Money Hold’em Contest.

Oy Vay! Could it be true, Annie Duke is becoming a television star? Now, don’t get me wrong – I used to think she was hott. But, after what I read about her scandalous ways on RGP I am not impressed. And, the fact that its Affleck’s sloppy seconds just doesn’t cut the cake for me!

Finally, it looks like PokerRoom has some competition. MFORMA has created a new multi-player game for mobile phones! It has some quality reviews so be sure to look into this!

1. Poker craze takes hold of STC – Who would have thought, 10 years ago, that poker would take its place among the most watched sports on television? Poker, a game long associated with smoky bars and shady characters, has come into the limelight in recent years, thanks in part to television.
2. Poker hand rankings – There are 10 hands that can win in poker. 10. High card. In poker, the ace is high, followed by the king, the queen, the jack, and then the rest in reverse numerical order. If no other combinations are dealt, an ace high will beat a king high, and so on.
3. ‘World Poker Tour’ Signs Official Beer – LOS ANGELES To promote its Michelob AmberBock brand, Anheuser-Busch has become the official beer sponsor of the 2005 World Poker Tour , according to the cable program.

Advantages To Keeping Notes:
The reason why Online Poker can be more profitable (to the user) than live poker is simple. There are many features that a user can utilize that live poker never could offer.

For instance, some advantages that online poker has over live poker is the ability to have multiple windows open, taking player notes, and advice from friends or experts.

The advantage we are focusing on here is taking players notes.

Taking detailed notes is EXTREMELY important. WHY? Because, if your serious about playing online – YOU MUST KEEP DETAILED notes on players. Plain and simple, you will encounter the same player again.

It’s so important that we have dedicated a whole section to teaching you how to keep details notes.

Poker Tip of the Day
Know Your Outs:
The rule of four-two is an extremely easy way to figure out basic odds for most situations where you know your outs. This method is not 100% accurate but it will supply you with an idea of your chances for making a hand. Here is how it works:

With two cards to come after the flop you multiply your number of outs by four. With one card to come after the turn, you multiply your number of outs by two. This will give you a quick figure to work with. If you have a four-card flush after the flop you have nine outs. With two cards to come, you multiply the nine by four and you get 36 percent chance of making the flush. The chart shows the true odds at 35 percent. With one card to come you multiply nine by two and get 18 percent. The chart shows that the true figure is 19.6. It is not completely accurate but it is pretty close, and it is an easy calculation to do in your head.

Learn to Leave:

Not only is this a great tip for poker players – but gamblers in general. However, this rule is often overlooked, even by professionals.

There is a simple rule of thumb, when your up LEAVE! Odd’s are that you can only go down from here. So, do yourself a favor and listen to the voice of reason nagging at you in the back of your head. It’s there for a reason.

Another huge advantage to Online Poker is that there is always another table just waiting for you, so if you’ve experienced 5 bad beats in a row at one table. It’s quite simple – just get up and leave.

You might be wondering why this rule is in the ADVANCED strategy section. Quite simply, its what sets apart professional gamblers from amateurs. Professionals know when its time to walk.

Poker Tip of the Day
Taking Notes In a Tournament:
A very valuable skill in an online tournament is taking notes.

A good player (in a multiple table tourney situation) will be watching multiple tables and taking notes on each player — knowing he will shortly encounter that player.

The advantage is he will now know for the most part exactly how he plays. His bluffs, his tells (if any) and his betting structure.

Taking notes during a tournament not only keeps you alert and busy but, it keeps you from playing the hands that will bust you out of the tournament quick.

Poker Tip of the Day
Buy-In More Than Necessary:
There are more than a variety of reasons for buying in more than necessary at the poker table.

Intimidation Factor
Reserves
Having “THE NUTS” and not being able to raise.

Although, the minimum suggested 20times the big blind is hardly what people buy-in with to this day. I would recommend a buy-in more on the lines of at least 50times the big blind.

After you start doing this – you will notice people respect your raises/play more. You will always have the opportunity to raise (not be the person who flops a boat, and is out of cash). And will always have a cash reserve after a bad beat.

Poker Tip of the Day
Feel Out The Situation and Bluff HARD (C/S Rule #4):

Don’t bluff when you have Two Pair and a flush draw on the flop? No one betting, but you have position? Make a smart-bluff at the pot. Make a bet that you think that is big, but callable. Like you want someone to call you. If no one has anything watch them all fold like cowards.

Don’t be scared if you get a caller, REbluff him on the next card – IF you don’t think it helped him.

If that fails, don’t hesitate to fold.

Tonights The NIGHT, TILT BABY
How many times have you went on TILT this month? Well if the answer is more than once than ESPN might have an answer for you.

ESPN’s new Poker Drama, TILT, will be on the air for its first night tonight. Check your local listings for exact times, standard is January 13th @ 9pm with a ridiculous amount of reruns to shortly follow.

However, some review’s are already in. John Ruch of the Boston Herald seemed to think that TILT will soon be TILTING off the air! Click here to read his opinionated article. On the other side the NY times thought the show to be on its way to the big time, with this optimistic piece.

Just like New York and Boston to do that to each other!

When viewing the TILT Preview special yesterday, One must give the show credit. It appears to have everything a good drama should and it also has Poker. Which is exactly what the show promised. What more could you want? Other than, a hundred begging affiliates to offer you $50 to sign-up for the fan club.

Tips for Poker feels that if you take this show with a grain of salt – it will be enjoyable. But, go in expecting this show to be MATLOCK from the start and expect to be disappointed.

Now, only if Poker players could use this show as an alternative to actually going on TILT and the show may very well be a hit!

1. Switch Up Your Play (Common Sense Rule #3):

Just Bluffed a big hand? Consider showing your bluffed hand to the table, then next time you have a huge hand bet really strong – you might get a few people who still think your bluffing! Alternate your play in a non-predictable manner but try to keep your betting rhythmic and predictable no matter what hand you have!

TILT, ESPN’s Baby – Coming Soon
In Case, you weren’t aware – ESPN’s new POKER-Based series “Tilt” will shortly be making it’s appearance. Will it FLOP? Or will it be a huge success? My bet is, that the show itself will be a huge success and continue to draw huge crowds and attention on Poker.

ESPN, truly has something going here. The most exciting part about Poker is what goes on in the players mind. And, if they work this show in the right way it will very well work out. The cast is dynamite, they have a great day to air it on. And, Tips4Poker is willing to bet, TILT will be a huge success. Be sure to check it out this Thursday!

Poker Tip of the Day
Use Your Mind (Common Sense Rule #2):
Think through every hand. The pro’s get to the final tournaments because they think through every hand and every move the person made. Think HARD! What hand do you think they have? What hand do you think they just made? Why are they betting this much? Are just a few examples of questions you should be asking yourself.

I cannot stress this enough. So much so that I will be writing an article on how to take some good notes in the future (updated: Player Notes page now up). While you always want to be paying attention to how people are playing, in online poker, players are always coming and going, which doesn’t give you time to feel them out. Taking notes cam help you when you play these opponents again. Even if you aren’t going to play this person it again, taking notes makes it much easier to keep a mental track of how each player plays and what to expect from them. The big things to note are: smart or stupid, aggressive or passive, tight or loose, straight up or bluffs, bets out a draw or not and what kind of hands do they play or pre-flop raise with. Yes, this is a lot of information to note, but it will help you in the long run.

Poker Tip of the Day
Wait a full table rotation before posting the BB:

This tip is probably debatable by many of the players out there. In my opinion, unless you know what you are doing, this tactic will save you money in the long run by letting you not only get mentally prepared for the game, but also gives you invaluable time to evaluate your opponents. The worst thing that can happen is to get dealt a strong hand early and then get caught in a massive raising war between two players you don’t know. They could be two maniacs for sure, but what if one of them is a maniac and the other player is super-tight? Most likely, that super tight player is holding the nuts while you are bumbling by with top pair or two pair. Not a good move. So be patient, take notes in the meanwhile and save money in the long run.

The landscape will continue to change as we move forward into the gaming future. We plan on being here for the long haul helping one player at a time.
