Holdem books....who's read em?

Just curious what percentage of online players have read any poker books. I have personally read Doyle Brunsons Super System/Power Poker. I did find it helpful in a lot of ways. The biggest thing I picked up was how to bet aggresively and when to do so.

What books have you read? Where they helpful? Any big ideas that stood out to you?

I'm in the process of reading super system (2) by Brunson and friends. I think its helpful. I was a little lost at the start because I hadn't read SuperSystem 1 , but I'm doing alright now. Anyhow, in my humble opionon I feel it was worth the $22 I spent at Target.

From a recent interview with Daniel N. I came across he recommends this

"Daniel: Super System and the Theory of Poker. For tournaments I would suggest Tournament Poker by David Sklansky."

From what I've heard Super Systems 2 is the same for the Holdem sections. He may add some stuff for online poker though. SS 1 has a lot of info on games no one plays these days, while SS2 inludes games like Omaha.

i own the "theory of poker"....

i believe it to be a great book....

i havent tried reading any other books yet, as i've approached my learning experience a lil bit different from most...

i wanted to learn the "theory of poker" book thru and thru before i moved on....

i didnt wanna try and get tons of different ideas before i mastered the ones i've just learned...

i wanna get that "tournament poker" book by sklansky that DN reccomended....

and mike caros tells (which a friend of mine has yet to let me borrow, arsehole....)...

Sklansky is one of my favorite authors but for tournaments, read Harrington's book. It is much better.

I definetely want to pick up Harrington's book, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

As for books I've read, I picked up Super System awhile back, Super System 2 I got from the point system at Doyle's Room, Caro's Book of Tells, and Hellmuth's book (which IMO blows...).

Being the aggressor. That's what I've picked up from books, forums, and other people; to win big, being the aggressor (selectively aggressive, knowing when to "hold'em and fold'em") makes things easier. After saying that I still play pretty tight but I like to attempt and be the aggressor anyway.

The Champshionship series by Cloutier and Mcevoy are great on Holdem - Brunson' Super System 1 is great for just good solid poker - currently reading Smiths Tips from the pros for low limit touraments - every good.


Read Phil Helmuth's " Play like the pros" - reflects how he is playing now - which is generally not very good.

I just ordered Harrington's tournament book, to improve my play in tournaments (obviously). I'll let people know how it is after I read it.

I didn't like Hellmuths book at all. He bragged more than he gave advice.

I know a lot of players don't like to admit to learning poker through books but I am a firm believer that beginners can greatly speed up their learning process through solid study of poker books.

I have read most of Skalansky's books, including those not focused on holdem. I find his writing style to be strait forward and easy to read. Of course, the best way to improve your game is not only through study but also by playing and learning how to apply concepts.

I read theory of poker and holdem for advanced players before I started playing online. I think it definitely helped but there was such a big difference rereading these books after I had been playing for a while.

I recommend anything by Skalansky for limit holdem.
When it comes to tournaments, TJ and McEvoy are the best in my opinion.

I am eager to read all of Super System 2 and also Dan Harrington's book.
There are tons of books out there right now and I wouldn't be surprised if there are twice as many more by this time next year. It seems anyone who wins a major tournament goes out and writes a book now.

Experience really is the best teacher but if you don't want your lessons to be too expensive, then its a lot cheaper to pick up a few books and study them to at least build up a general knowledge of the game and winning concepts. Then as you play more, you can adjust your style based on how you feel comfortable or are most successful playing. There are always different ways to approach any given hand in poker. Studying different theories will help you recognize the pros and cons of each approach so that you have great knowledge on which to base your choices.
