Freerolls
It might happen to anybody to run out of cash, and sometimes it can happen so badly that you don't even have a buck to send it to your poker account. What do you do in the meantime? Either you stop playing poker or you go to play freerolls.
Well, exactly this happend to me, about two weeks ago, and for the time being (probably untill May) I am out of cash and I played a few freeroll tournaments. You don't really win money there. $ 28 for the first, $ 17 for the second and so on. The point is, there you learn how not to play! As nobody has to invest money, you can start over and over again without harming your bankroll, a lot of players commit all possible mistakes. This does not mean that it is easy to arrive at the final table, when there are 3,000 players in the tourney, but you will increase your stack much, much easier than in any real tournament. What is the point of playing this nonsence, beside of passing your time? Compare the play! Observe all the mistakes of the other players! Make yourself some notes about it - and don't play like that, when you are back in the real live of poker. |

I find in the bigger freerolls after about an hour the play gets decent. In the beginning especially for the smaller freerolls the people are just crazy. Private freerolls also tend to be more realistic, as people play for bragging rights at whatever forum they're coming from.

I enjoy freerolls since my tournament game isn't at a level where I want to risk a lot of buy ins yet. I occasionally play SNG and small buy in events but I probably play freerolls more than anything when it comes to tournaments. As far as the money goes, I could definitely make a lot more playing cash games for two or three hours than playing in a freeroll and finishing in the money only to win $10 or $20 for three hours of work.
For me, its a good learning tool. Yes, play is often erradic early on as some players love to gamble since they have nothing to lose. I have occasionally employed this strategy myself. Its not the worst thing you can do. You figure if you can get lucky once or twice early going all in, then you will have a big stack to work with. If you play it right and change gears appropriately, this gives you a big advantage throughout the whole tournament. I've yet to win a huge tournament with 1000 or more entrants but I generally finish in the top 10-15% unless I'm gambling early and bust out in one of the first few spots. Good tournaments for me are making the top 5%-10% which usually pays out and a great finish is the final table or just a few spots away. The thing with some freerolls is, it just takes winning one or two to make a huge difference. I've played in some where the prize for first is any where from $500-$1000. If you can keep finishing high and playing well, its only a matter of time before you catch lucky or get some hands at the right time late to win the whole thing. |

I'm not sure where I got this link from... I don't think it was at this site but if you really enjoy them here is a pretty sweet schedule that lists a whole butt load of freerolls on a lot of different sites www.freerollz.

My favorite freerolls: bet365K Saturday 5K Noble's three daily ones (one is 2K, the other two are $1000 I think) Pacific Pokers two daily $1000 ones The first hour of a freeroll is CRAZY - tons of all-ins, extremely loose (and generally very poor) play... and alot of trash talk haha. After that - the game becomes much more serious, and after about 1.5 hours it is extremely competitive! Last edited by tiptheboss; 02-09-2006 at 03:05 AM. |

That is one of the best I've seen. There's lots of sites out there that list freerolls, but I really like this one.
